Welcome

Guiding parents of young children is the focus of this website with the goal of fulfilling every parent’s desire to learn how to assist their child in optimal learning. By piquing your child’s curiosity about their environment and supplementing their knowledge through reading, writing, listening, and speaking whenever you are together – by reading books, creating hands-on projects, and engaging in authentic experiences – learning will be robust!

Living with Letters where parents and caregivers and their prekindergarten children have fun learning together – where adults wear their play clothes and see the world through their child’s eyes!

Storybook Reading

Reading with your young child is a potent force in a child’s literacy development.

Phonological Awareness

The ability to hear and distinguish sounds in spoken language assists children in building phonological awareness.

Emergent Writing

When young children imitate adults around them by writing or scribbling and then understand that letters represent meaning.

Alphabetic Awareness

The earliest stage of letter recognition when children realize that every letter has a name and a corresponding sound.

Oral Language and Literacy

Listening and speaking skills are essential in learning to read and write.

Science and Literacy

Explore nature with your child by using five senses to experience the wonders of your surroundings.

Living with Letters is a parents’ and caregivers’ portal through which we journey together exploring daily literacy activities and teachable moments that present themselves on any given day for families of prekindergarten children. Early literacy or emergent literacy activities are a prerequisite for later reading and writing skills (Clay, 2005). The goal of the Living with Letters program is for families and caregivers to take advantage of opportunities or teachable moments throughout the day and engage their child in literacy activities. The more practice young children have in these activities, the more prepared they will be in learning to read and write in kindergarten and beyond.

Living with Letters invites parents, caregivers and their prekindergarten children to have fun learning together. Each video highlights authentic teachable moments in our surroundings for parents and caregivers to embrace a new learning opportunity with their young children!
Experiencing the world around us is a great way to have fun learning. Children learn when they interact with adults through listening, speaking, reading, and writing – all skills that are encouraged in activities displayed in videos on each page of this website. Each video begins with an experience in our environment where learning begins and then supplemented by books to share with your prekindergarten children, in addition to multi-sensory activities, writing about the experience, sharing dialogue with your child, and most importantly having fun learning!
